The Kossev Consortium’s first foray into putting world-leading science and applied technology into the hands of coaches and rowers was a resounding success.  The November 7th event held at the Cherry Hill Campus of Swedish Hospital in Seattle provided a terrific venue for lively discussion, exchange of information and learning.  The crowd of about 60 attendees and presenters was diverse, representing  seven universities, seven rowing clubs, two junior programs, three product manufacturers, and the US National Team and hailing from  eight states and Canada.

The presenters provided in-depth, research-based evidence about approaches to the training and coaching questions that coaches struggle to answer.

  • Dr. Dale Cannavan and Kristin Collins and Sam Blades, from Canada’s Own the Podium program shared cutting edge technologies in use in labs and rowing programs around the world.
  •  Dr. Fritz Hagerman reviewed the forty years of data he has collected from his research on the cardio-vascular and muscular physiology of our country’s top rowers.
  • Dr. Kate Ackerman shared her research about the female athlete triad and the health effects of lightweight rowing, as well as the latest knowledge about nutrition for rowers.
  • Dr. Dan Tripps discussed the importance of athletes’ feelings of self-efficacy in promoting peak performance and the coaches’ role in helping develop a supportive, effective training environment.

The discussions at the event and the kick-off dinner the preceding evening have gone a long way to create a community of coaches and researchers willing to learn from each other and investigate ways to improve performance and enhance the sport – main objectives of the Kossev Consortium.
